Frostbite 3 will support AMD Mantle and NVIDIA NVAPI APIs

AMD’s Mantle API is currently being integrated into Battlefield 4 based on Frostbite 3, which is arguably the most anticipated title this year after GTA V. Such is its fame that AMD has even bundled its latest and best new Radeon R9 290X graphics card with the new title and those of you lucky enough to pre-order the GPU now could trade in the game at no extra cost. The AMD Mantle API is exclusively developed for GCN compatible Radeon graphics cards. This would allow developers to dig deep into the metal to provide console-level optimizations through ease of programming and faster optimizations on a consistent GCN chip architecture. This means that we would see better performance across the entire line of AMD graphics cards compatible with the GCN architecture, ranging from the higher Radeon R9 290X to the lower R7 250X.

But Frostbite 3 is more than that, as John Anderson, the head of the DICE team in AMD’s Mantle API development, said on his Twitter profile that Battlefield 4 will also feature NVIDIA’s NVAPI support as in Battlefield 3. While there aren’t many optimizations to be as great with NVIDIA’s API as with AMD’s Mantle, it’s still worth noting that at least DICE supports both Red and Team graphics cards. Green, which means PC optimizations at both ends. In addition to that, you will have the option to choose between using Mantle and DirectX 11 if you are using a GCN compatible GPU. Frostbite 3 has optimizations for the general PC audience, which shouldn’t come as a surprise since PC is the primary platform for the next-gen DICE engine. In fact, AMD’s Mantle looks so interesting that after DICE the folks at Activision also planned to get on board and support AMD’s Mantle API. DICE showed a brief video of Battlefield 4 running in Eyefinity, powered by a single Radeon R9 290X GPU.

The Frostbite Mantle not only allows the optimization of the GPU, but also gives the CPU an increase in performance since very low tasks are handled by the CPU such as rendering, loading and streaming (loaded on the GPU), which enables perfect parallel rendering that allows the use of up to 8 processor cores currently found on AMD’s FX processors. It also helps to avoid potential system bottlenecks that can occur if the processor is under load, which in the case of Mantle will not happen at all.

It is clearly mentioned in the slide that the AMD Mantle API for Battlefield 4 is just the beginning as there are many other games with the same technology for AMD Radeon GCN compatible GPUs.
